The Rare Breed Mi-Ki History
The origin of the Rare Breed Mi-Ki is not fully known as there are not any official records available. It is a
new breed started in the late 1980's by a woman who went by the name of Micki (Maureen) Mackin
Westburg, among others. Micki started developing a lineage of toy dogs derived from the Papillon, Japanese
Chin, Maltese & the small Shih Tzu. Some credit Micki Mackin with the use of her name when she called
the little dogs Mi-Ki's (pronounced Me-Key).
The original Mi-Ki breed standard set forth by Micki are for all Mi-Ki's to have long coats only...a long,
cottony coat or a long silky/straight coat...the Mi-Ki has hair, not fur, with no undercoat making it
hypoallergenic & non-shedding.
The Mi-Ki should not exceed 10 inches tall or weigh over 10 lbs...the average being 5-9 lbs...
The Mi-Ki is a compact, well balanced toy breed with large, round & very expressive eyes. They have two ear
settings, dropped & erect (up ears).
The Mi-Ki carries its beautifully feathered tail over the back with a long flowing plume.
The Mi-Ki is lively, playful, trusting, affectionate, alert, sensitive, very intelligent & considered to be
excellent therapy dogs. They are even tempered, sweet natured, seldom bark & love children. They will easily
adapt to their surroundings & are easy to train. These happy little campers love to go outdoors for a walk &
some playtime.
The Mi-Ki is naturally social & extremely catlike in their mannerisms, i.e., standing on their hind legs to
attack a dangling string or paw boxing another pet buddy, pouncing on a favorite stuffed toy, crawling under
a sofa & then peeping out where all you can see are their little black eyes, chasing their little play pals
around the furniture & down the hall, & then finally, curling up in a little round, fluffy ball with their tail
wrapped around them to take a quick catnap.
The Mi-Ki is a very healthy breed of dog, normally living into its teens. They basically have no known
hereditary or congenital defects at this time.
This breed is registered as a rare breed & shown in rare breed classes at shows. They are registered with
several well-known kennel clubs. These kennel clubs have a class for this toy breed & are shown just like
any other breed...
